This week I attended one of the largest photography conventions in the world, the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International 2012 conference in Las Vegas. I was in Vegas for five days, taking classes, hanging out with other photographers I’ve known mostly on Facebook and shopping the massive trade show for new products I know my clients will adore. {Coming soon: new albums!}
On Wednesday, my friend Stacie Frazier of Haute Shots boudoir and beauty photography–Las Vegas resident and therefore area expert–put together a photo shoot for five of our photographer friends at Red Rock, just outside Vegas. Red Rock’s landscape is similar to Colorado’s Red Rocks, just without the natural amphitheater. In other words: gorgeous. It felt fantastic to get outside the massive hotel/casino/convention space and into the desert air.

Stacie hired two models for us: Tori and Lysandra, and had her beauty team do their hair and makeup. We picked them up at Stacie’s studio, then headed for the hills. When we arrived at our chosen spot {selected with the “hey, let’s turn here” method}, we split into two groups. I’ve done shootouts before and they were a bit chaotic. Not so much this time: We worked like a finely tuned clock, taking turns with the models, sharing gear (love my Nikon shooters!) and generally having fun. I knew by the end we’d all have gorgeous and very different images to show.

Being out in the elements made me realize that as much as I love my beautiful and private studio, it sure is wonderful for me and the person in front of my camera to be out in nature. I’ll be planning some outdoor glamour portrait sessions in the spring after the snow melts, as well as creating a few outdoor sets on my property for all types of portraiture.

I am loving the images I created in the desert. Which is your favorite?
